Choosing the Right Lawn.

Kikuyu, Berea, or Cynodon? Choosing the right grass type depends heavily on your shade levels, foot traffic, and soil type. We break down the most popular grass varieties so you can lay a lawn that actually lasts.

Kikuyu Grass

Full Sun
☀️ Sun: High
👣 Traffic: High
💧 Water: Med

The most popular choice for large, sunny properties. Kikuyu is a vigorous, fast-growing grass that repairs itself quickly, making it ideal for homes with active dogs and children.

  • Exceptional wear tolerance and fast recovery.
  • Creates a dense, bright green mat.
  • Requires frequent mowing during summer.
  • Warning: Will thin out and die in shaded areas.

Berea (LM) Grass

Shade Tolerant
🌤️ Sun: Low/Med
👣 Traffic: Med
💧 Water: Med

Indigenous to South Africa, Berea (often called LM grass) is the undisputed king of shade. It has a slightly lighter green color and a spongy, soft texture underfoot.

  • Thrives under trees and along shaded boundary walls.
  • Grows on a trailing surface runner.
  • Should not be mowed too short; keep the mower blade high.
  • Warning: Lower traffic tolerance than Kikuyu.

Cynodon Grass

Drought Resistant
☀️ Sun: High
👣 Traffic: High
💧 Water: Low

Often used on golf courses and sports fields, Cynodon features a very fine leaf blade and a deep root system, making it highly drought-resistant and tough.

  • Excellent drought and heat tolerance.
  • Handles heavy foot traffic brilliantly.
  • Can be mowed very short for a manicured look.
  • Warning: Highly invasive; requires strong edging.
